Briefing for the 2004 Measles Campaign
The Measles Campaign is planning to visit as many as seven countries in 2004. These countries are: Guinea, Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Mali, Niger, Tchad, and Togo. If we work fast we can add ITN (Insecticide Treated Nets) to the Red Cross's effort and kill two birds with one stone. This is the cheapest and most efficient way to reduce malaria.

To find out more information on the Red Cross Measles Campaign, please visit their website at www.measlesinitiative.org/solution2.asp.

Time Line (2004)

  • ITNs MUST be funded and ordered by July

  • Delivery of ITNs in October

  • Preliminary trainings in Sept/Oct

  • Final volunteer Trainings in Nov

  • Handouts in Dec
Background
Malaria is a sickness that affects a wide number of people in Africa. It is carried by mosquitoes from someone who has the disease to someone who does not. Young children and pregnant women are at great risk of malaria. The easiest way to prevent and eventually exterminate the disease is to have those at high risk sleep under ITNs. This is a cheep solution, but it has also yielded the best results.

When trying to organize any effort on such a large scale it costs a lot to run the overhead. The training, the travel, simply the management costs a fortune. Rotarians around the world are offering their services for free to work to achieve this goal. We have the management down for free. To implement this campaign would also cost a lot as well. However, we are using the Measles Campaign as our delivery method. The Measles Campaign already visits our targeted population in an effort to rid the world of measles. By using the Measles Campaign we have reduced costs to simply the price of the ITNs and medications.

*=Global Fund Aids TB & Malaria. Number is estimated by assuming 1/3 of money designated for malaria is spent on nets. For the sake of not over estimating, we figured the cost of ITNs at 5 US dollars a net. We know this price can be reduced if we purchase together.
