Country Summary:
The former French Cameroon and part of British Cameroon merged in
1961 to form the present country. Cameroon has generally enjoyed
stability, which has permitted the development of agriculture,
roads, and railways, as well as a petroleum industry. Despite
movement toward democratic reform, political power remains firmly in
the hands of an ethnic oligarchy.
Malaria is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in
Cameroon. It accounts for 40% to 50% of medical consultations, 30%
of hospitalizations, 40% of deaths among children under five years,
and 35-40% of hospital deaths. Resistance to chloroquine is high and
up to 67% in some sentinel sites. Malaria contributed to poverty by
lowering individual productivity (26% of total absenteeism from work
are attributed to malaria) and consumes up to 40% of households'
health budget.

The number of ITNs needed is the sum of children under 5 and
pregnant women.

assuming 1/3 of money designated for malaria is spent on nets. For
the sake of not over estimating, we figured the cost of ITNs at 5 US
dollars a net. We know this price can be reduced if we purchase
together.
